Government Run Bus Services

Key Information for Families

The Victorian School Bus Program (SBP) supports students in rural and regional areas by providing access to school bus services for both government and non-government schools. Access to school bus travel is subject to eligibility requirements, available seating capacity, and compliance with program conditions.

Non-Government School Students

Please note:

  • Government school students are given priority access to available bus seats.
  • Non-government school students may be allocated a seat where capacity allows.
  • Non-government student demand alone does not justify the creation of a new bus service or route extension.
  • Parents/carers must agree in writing that their child may only travel while seating is available.
  • Parents/carers must be prepared to make alternative travel arrangements if their child is required to relinquish their seat due to capacity constraints.

Parent and Student Responsibilities

By accessing school bus services, students and parents/carers agree to:

  • Comply with all School Bus Program conditions of travel.
  • Ensure students are transported safely to and from their designated bus stop.
  • Supervise students and take responsibility for their safety while they are waiting at bus stops.
  • Understand that access to school bus travel is a privilege rather than an entitlement.

Bus Stops

Bus stop locations are determined by the Student Transport Area Planning team and are selected to serve the greatest number of students while minimising travel times.

For safety reasons, students can only be picked up and dropped off at approved bus stops. Bus drivers are not permitted to carry students outside of approved school bus routes or stops.

Emergency Management

In the event of an emergency:

  • School bus services may be cancelled if any part of a route is considered unsafe.
  • During rapidly developing emergencies, services may be suspended, buses may return to the school, or students may be held at school until it is safe to travel.
  • Parents/carers should familiarise themselves with the school’s bus emergency management procedures.

Applying for School Bus Travel

To apply for school bus travel, submit an application online through the Student Travel Assistance Portal.

*Please note, a new application must be submitted if circumstances change, such as a change of residential address or school.
